Hi Alphas! Before we really dive back into the harsh reality of Semester 2 (some of us are still in holiday mood), let's revisit how we spent our vacation break together! (:

1. SP GUSTO EXCHANGE!

There were so many people on the mats! It was a fruitful exchange as we all learned, stunted and had fun! :)

2. CHEER CAMP 2011!

A truly memorable training and bonding camp meant for us to "shag 死" & forge stronger bonds and team spirit. We shared laughter, hthts, fatigue, stress, sweat and even tears. But above all, we created a shared memory and experience and got to know each other better.

(Hope you guys don't mind my insertion of personal feelings and thoughts here) I've always believed that the fundamentals of a team lies in mutual trust, tolerance and understanding, as well as a shared goal that we're all motivated to work towards. Don't let misunderstandings and personal issues fester and breed as these factors will ultimately cause our Alpha pyramid to crumble and fall. Instead, we should seek for ways to filter out these bugs and squash them, so that we can continue building up a strong pyramid. I sincerely hope everyone had something to take home from the camp and more importantly, that everyone enjoyed it :)

Would like to start off this post by thanking all Alphas who made this year's Sports Awards Performance (SAP) such a great success (: It was an awesome performance, especially since it's the first public performance put up by our Alpha juniors! From Chew Long to Alphas with regards to safety (:

Hi everyone (:

Just wanted to drop you guys all an email to talk about some stuff. Bear with me a while alright.

Firstly, I would really like to say that you all are a really really really great bunch of juniors and I really enjoy each training with you all. It makes me real happy to see that most of you all are very enthusiastic when it comes to training and that everyone has been trying to work hard in every small little ways. =DDDD For example, the girls who constantly try to stretch themselves during free time when you all are not stunting, helping each other to pull your scorpions after I taught you all how to do it etc etc. I love cheering with you all because you all are so so so hardworking and fun loving! Thanks for making training this enjoyable thus far!

Now, time for some little things that I would like everyone to pay more attention to. Like Li Jing said in his email for all, cheerleading isnt just about having fun. Of course, we must have fun when we stunt and train and cheer etc and enjoy ourselves because we are cheerleaders, but I hope that everyone pay more attention to each other's safety especially when stunts level are getting higher and higher each training. Not only the flyers' safety, but everyone's safety I have to emphasize. To simply put this across directly (as every one of the senior should already know), please DO NOT MAKE ANYONE ELSE PAY FOR YOUR MISTAKE. Everyone please please please keep this in mind.

What do we mean by that? Lets say, a flyer is up on a stunt and she's doing a pop cradle. She did her job by riding the pop, locking hard, 'pelvis-ing' etc but the bases fail to catch her and she ends up on the ground. So, now we ask, why should she pay for your mistake when she did all that she was supposed to do but her bases fail to cradle her properly? Or another scenario that the a flyer is doing a pop cradle and her bases did their job by using their legs to pop her on the same timing and put their arms up high to catch her but she decided to freak out half way through and crash down onto her bases, injuring them. So we ask again, why do her bases have to pay for her mistake when they did what they should?

Sorry for the naggy example but I do hope everyone of you can understand that cheerleading is a sport that requires really alot of cooperation and coordination from everyone involved in the stunt - the main bases, the spotter(s) and the flyer. If one person decides to hesitate during a stunt and not do his/her job well, someone else may end up having to pay for his/her mistake. So why should we let this kind of things happen?

As stunts level get higher, our safety level must also get higher as well. Please do not have the mindset that cheerleading is about sending the flyers up only. Like what Liyuan mentioned in the debrief today, when you guys let a flyer fly, it is the bases & spotters' responsibilities to make sure that she comes down safely too. And when you girls let your bases base you, it is also your responsibility to ensure that you do what you're supposed to do to keep your bases safe too. Keep this in mind alright? DO NOT make anyone else pay for your mistake. It is not about doing push ups for every flyer's fall or any other form of punishment because all those cannot compensate for any form of injury. Yep.

Self accountability is what I am talking about here. Everyone should be self accountable. If you missing trainings and thus not proficient enough to do a proper cradle causing a flyer's fall, why should she pay for your mistake? If you not locking properly causing a base to injure himself while stunting with you, why should he pay for your mistakes? If you hesitating when you are supposed to pop and cause the spotter to be injured because the flyer comes crashing down on him/her, why should him/her pay for your mistake? So people, please take good care of each other by doing what you're supposed to and be focused alright? XP

As sports awards approaches, you will find that we have lesser time to drill you all on the basics as soon as the routine is up. However, if at any point in time anyone of you feels that a certain stunt is consistently not going up smoothly because of any issue, PLEASE approach any senior available and we can help to correct anything. Also, do not be reluctant to go back to your basics. Really. If your pitch up 180 to extension is not hitting smoothly, then go back to just straight pitch to elevator, then to extension, then prep twist to elevator then to extension etc. There is NOTHING SHAMEFUL about taking a step back to recap the basics before progressing further. Remember, if your basics are good, you can progress much faster. So do not worry alright? (:

Oh yar, another thing. Sorry for being naggy. >.< I know that everyone's pretty new to this sport and that when a stunt fail etc or when you dont feel comfortable when doing a stunt, you always feel that it is because you didnt do it well. Also, there are times when you feel that your bases or flyer is doing something wrongly but you being new to the sport (and feel noobish), do not dare to voice it out. Here, Chew Long tells you not to worry and please voice out anything. If flyer you feel that this base is doing something different from the other base and you feel weird (e.g his gripping is not tight enough etc) please do not compensate and keep quiet about it. ): Understand that everyone of us is here to learn from each other and help each other by correcting each other's mistake. There is nothing wrong with that alright? (: If you keep quiet about it and manage to hit the stunt still somehow, that person will not know his/her mistake and may end up injuring others. Why should that happen? Right? I strongly encourage everyone to learn from each other's good points and to correct/point out each other mistakes etc. If you see that your friend is not pelvis-ing hard enough, remind her to do so the next time whether she is a senior flyer or not etc. By doing so, not only does he/she learns, you are also reminding yourself too. Also, never forget to encourage each other along the way. If you see that your friend is pelvis-ing more and showing improvement, give her encouragement too. Same for the bases or just anyone.

I am really vvvv happy today because today I decided to try to do a pop twist (which I used to be able to do but somehow lost it totally )))): ) and even though I tried twice and it was still like crap, but honestly, I dont feel really unhappy. Why? Because firstly, all the flyers in my group were encouraging me and my bases were too. Secondly, junior flyers like Janyce were correcting my mistake and it makes me feel so happy. =DDD Haha just something vv random. I hope everyone else have the same attitude during training too! Keep an open mind because everyone in this team is still learning and remember that we are learning TOGETHER.

Alright, sorry sorry for being this naggy because I just typed whatever thats off my mind currently. To end it off, I have to say that cheerleading may seem like an easy sport to people who dont understand or are not in it, but you guys being in it know that it jolly well isnt and trust me when I say that it is only going to get tougher. So please please keep your flyers and your bases and your spotters safe and treat each and every one else like your loved ones. I say again, do not make anyone else pay for your mistakes. Of course, accidents do happen in the process of learning but I hope that they happen because they are pure accidents and not because anyone did not do their job properly. Continue to encourage and motivate each other along the way as this is really really really vvvvvvvvvv important and dont give up on anyone or any stunt. (: Last but not least, come to training with an open mind and the willingness to learn from and help each other. Everyone is learning just like you (: Do not take anything or any harsh words that we may use on you too personally. Know that those are really just because we want to see you improve and we really meant well. Alright?? Love you all loads.

This particular quote that I really like just to share with you all :

Keep your dreams alive. Understand that to achieve anything, it requires faith, belief in yourself, vision, hard work, determination, consistency and dedication. Remember that all things are possible for those who believe. Believe and act as if it is impossible to fail. And though at times it may seem too difficult to continue, hold onto your dreams. One day, you will wake up to find that you are the person you dreamed of, simply because you had the courage to believe in your potential and hold onto your dreams.

Hi Alphas,

Hope you are doing well with your studies during recess week.

Anyway, as I already said during trainings, routine training for sports awards performance will start after recess week. So for those of you who have not yet updated your information on the google document link, please do it by today so that our coach can plan the routine ASAP.

Please take noted everyone of you are encouraged to participated in this performance. Once you signed up, please make sure that you are able to commit for the trainings. This is because that routine training is different from our normal trainings. We are going to have fixed groupings and positions. So if one mid-tier or base does not show up during training, the whole pyramid/ group stunt would not be able to go up. In this case, we are wasting other people's time. Hope you all can understand.

I believe that all of you enjoyed training and cheering for the past one and half month. However, just like any other sports, cheerleading is not just about having fun. As the training intensity goes up, you will start to see the harsh side of this sports. Honestly speaking, cheerleading is a tough sports. It is not always about hitting the stunts and making yourselves happy. More importantly, it is about how you are going to adjust and cheer yourselves and your teammates up when the stunts keep failing, and in the end, hit them. This fighting spirit makes cheerleading so fun and enjoyable. In future routine running, when the coach or seniors are getting upset because of stunt failure, or when the we have to re-run the whole routine just because one stunt fails, please be patient to your friends and your teammates.

In the end, cheerleading is a competitive sports. The ultimate goal of this team is at SNCC (Singapore National Cheerleading Championship) which is going to be held in next March. That is the place where all of the cheerleading teams in Singapore want to showcase at. If you really want to continue cheerleading in university, really love this sports, you have to go for it. We need at least 16 people to participate in the team category and currently we do not have so many seniors. In another words, we still need you juniors to fill in half of the team. The selection would be based on the prgression in skills, training attitude and attendance. So if you are interested, please work harder towards it. Meanwhile, during training coach and the seniors will constantly look for those people who are progressing faster to join the seniors' training, and prepare them faster for future performance and our nationals. At this moment, some of you are learning slightly slower than the others, but do not worry, most of us started cheerleading without any background. So if enough efforts are put in, you will see the result. We can always send in more than one team or participate in more categories if everyone of you reach certain level.

I have to say that cheerleading is a sports with very heavy commitments and it is not easy to handle it together with your school works and other activities. Therefore, we try not to occupy your time outside normal training timeslots. Starting from next week, we will try to cut training on time at 930pm for those days without coach. So you all can go back early to study or rest. On the other hand, traininng will start exactly at 630pm sharp. It means by 630pm, everyone have to be ready, with your shoes worn, strap-up, de-accessory. Attendence will be taken by Engmeng. So we will have limited training time and I hope everyone can treasure it and make good use of it. Meanwhile, we are aiming to make training more effective---everyone would have limited chances for trying the stunts. People who are learning faster would be given more advanced stunts to try. In this case, I hope we can have a 3-hour of soild training on every training day. And please take your initiatives, be agressive during this three hours. Otherwise, you have to spend extra time on you own to catch up.

Furthermore, there are some things that you can look forward to as well.

Firstly, monthly full attendence awards will be given out. So if your attendences are consistently good, a small prize would be given to you at the begining of the following month. Please let engmeng know if you are having night classes on training days, as well as any other urgent cases that would take you out of trainings. Secondly, we are planning to celebrate our members' birthday together every month. Birthday cake will be bought for those alpha people who are having their birthday on that same month. More details will be released from our logistic & welfare IC, Chris!!! Lastly, there would be more performance coming up and we hope to include more juniors in. So please worker harder and we will start to let you try more advanced stuffs. But the top priority for now is still sport awards performance which almost everyone of you are involved.

I just remembered need to re-post the merchandise designs that will be put on cheer products can we can sell and fatten our club funds.
Anyway on a side note, I did IPPT today, almost failed during my first station: shuttle run. Chui my first attempt and ran a 10.8s which is worth 1 out of 5 points. Anyway it's over (secured some money which I will finish in 1 year if I spend S$33.33 every month) so I don't have to worry about running and start chionging more gym and gymnastics until the next Nationals.

Going to add 30 emails as writers so I hope this blog won't end up becoming Alpha team managers' solo act...

A Tribute to Ben!

Time flies and it has been slightly less than a year since Ben joined Alpha. I remembered that fateful friday when I walked into MPSH 6 after work and saw 2 ang mos training with Alphas. One of them is Ben! He surprised me with his amazing gymnastics skills and his curiosity in cheerleading. After the first training, I was very impressed and excited that Ben actually decided to stay on. We didn't have much hope initially as most of the exchange students in the team disappeared after less than 1 semester, but Ben was different! He had consistent commitment to Alpha, all the way up to Nationals. He joined Alpha for the camp and outings as much as he can. He stayed by Alpha during the times of depression before the nationals. He gave valuable advice on tumbling and stunts from the perspective of an acrobatics coach. He took so many nice and professional photos of the team. He did a layout for Nationals and saved the whole team. Etc... I really feel grateful for the things he had done for Alpha, and I am sure the team feels the same as well. And now, Ben is finally leaving the team to return back to Germany. I can't help but feel a bit emo, as thou a family member is migrating overseas. Most of the times, when I send people off, they return back to Singapore. But I guess this time it won't be the case, at least in the near future. Hence, on behalf of the whole team, I wish Ben all the best and hope you had an enjoyable stay in Singapore, NUS and Alpha Verve. Once you are an Alpha, you will always be an Alpha! Lets keep in touch, and when there's a chance, do visit or we will visit! =)

I added a slideshow instead of a page for photos, mostly rip from facebook and our alumni's album. There may be a glitch/bug/something 'cause when I do previewing sometimes the slideshow doesn't load properly (I have to re-save the html part and then refresh again). I am guessing it's because of the youtube video in the post 'cause everytime is one can load the other buay-sai.

So let me know in the shout out box if anyone kena the same problem.

We cheered for the crowd which had been queueing overnite for the launch of Harry Potter and The Deadly Hallows at Borders (Orchard) in the morning 5am until the release time 7.01am. Everyone was spontaneous as the release time drew nearer and many were dressed up as characters in the book.

The cheerleaders who attended the workshop have all gained tremendously. The Taiwanese cheerleaders have taught us many new things, including more variations of stunts, new techniques and new countings which greatly improved the effeciency of our stunts.

IFC COACHING COURSE CLASS 1, 11-13 DEC 2007
It had been a worthy learning experience for the 6 Alphas who were sent for the course. Everyone managed to learn valuable lessons and were aspired to be better cheerleaders, helping their team mates to improve at the same time. Congratulations to Leron and Jia Yi for passing the exam to become certified IFC Coaches. With greater power comes greater responsibility. The squad would definitely benefit under their guidance.

ALPHA VERVE CHEERLEADING CAMP, 13-16 DEC 2007
This was the first cheerleading camp organised in the squad and it was a success. The cheerleaders trained hard from day to night, doing physical training, jumps, tumbling, cheers, dance and stunts. The team bonding that had been developed during these 3 days was significant. And the young cheerleaders had learnt to endure through hardships together, play hard together and train hard together. Within the team, we trained for each other, trust each other, try new things, and now, we are in the road to our well deserved triumpth.

Alpha Verve first appearance on channel U live! We have been approached by Media Corp to coach and perform side by side with one of the contestants Mable Soe for the grand finals of You are the One, a new face search programme. The team trained hard together with Mable everyday and finally our efforts paid off with a great performance. It had certainly been a roller coaster ride for all of us involved.

As part of the tradition to support our own dragon boat team, the cheerleading squad brought a total of approximately 200 supporters dressed in orange to Bedok Reservoir. We cheered at the races as one big NUS family and had the fun we all deserved.

The second time Alpha Verve is coaching UOB Group 2 for their cheerleading competition held in their annual retreat. Despite excluding stunts in the routine this year, the office workers trained hard each time and managed to defend their title as champions again.

Denvers cheerleading squad cordinally invited the cheerleaders from MONSTERS down to Singapore. Other particiating squads are team spectrum, vj knights, kr steppers, sajc sphiers, magnum force, smu flare etc. We have definitely learnt many new things and improved our skills. We have also emerged 2nd in group stunt and 1st in combined team stunting with sajc spires in the mini competition throughout the 2 days.

STANDCHART MARATHON RUNSPIRATION, 7 DEC 2008
The first time Alpha Verve took part in this event. The cheerleaders trained hard right after their exams and on the day of the marathon, they woke up before sun rise to cheer for the marathon runners. We presented our routine after the marathon and managed to clinch 2nd place in the runspiration cheerleading competition.

We trained very hard right after the exams to compete for the semi finals. Although we did not manage to make it to the finals, it has been a great experience and process for many of us, especially for the graduating seniors. We will definitely do better the next round. This is the cheerleaders' never say die attitude!

Finally, we have done our performance in NUS Sport Award. As though it not completely 100%, it is 99.9999% as JiaYi said. Let's make it 100% in our next performances.

   Today all of us had a lot of fun. Not only practice our own part but the all girls and all guys stunts did have great distribution. It shows that guys also can be flyers and girl base is also very stable rite? :)
          Hope all of us will keep this mood during every later trainings.

IFG closing will be next Saturday(19/9) so that we have 2 more trainings to practice our performance. 

Wed : go through all position again 

Fri : rehearsal 

Our performance will be at 4h30. However, please come earlier at 3h to make sure that everything can go smoothly.

For the clothes : White shirt ( round neck) + cheer bottom. Girls will have ribbons for their hair also.

As midterm tests are coming in 2 weeks, our schedule has some changes to make it feasible for all of us.

During RECESS WEEK : Our training will maybe on day time. The exact time will be confirmed soon
After term break, we got" MID-TERM" week. As we need more concentration on studying, Mon (28/9) and Wed (30/9) are two off-day for us. We will not have training on these 2 days but Friday still have.

Hey guys since I only got feedback from a few (namely coach and jiayi) and there seems to be a certain liking towards the toga design I decided to take the liberty of improving on the design and here they are:

for the 2nd to 4th design I decided to play around and attempt (very unsuccessfully) to see how the different base colours would look like yeah so its for you visual animals out there =]

ok this time round please please give feedbacks ok including guys (cause your design will be based on this and you need to choose base colour also) Current popular pick is 2nd top and 3rd skirt yupz =]

People its your uniform as well you're going to wear it I expect a certain extent of minimal responsibility towards it thanks =]

This is a reminder for the cheer clinic schedule this Saturday (16 May 09),
230pm to 5pm, at Potong Pasir CC.
The venue is at the multi-purpose room on level 2, above KFC.

The VIP passes for the Cheerfest Semi-finals and Finals will be issued during the cheer clinic.

The schedule of the clinic is:

1500 - 1530 Learning of Cheer
1530 - 1600 Positioning and Formation
1600 - 1610 Break
1610 - 1700 Practising for Mass Cheer Please

note that teams will be performing the mass cheer during the Finals.

SKM will be reimbursing McDonald's meal coupon for all cheerleaders who have performed in the mass cheer during the finals (up to 5 cheerleaders per team).

An experienced team from AACCA will be conducting private cheer clinics and the AACCA course on 1st to 4th June, 1pm to 5pm. (one day workshop)
This invitation is open to all SKM Cheerfest Open (Non-stunt) and Open (Stunt) teams.
Charges is at $750 per workshop for the entire team. no limit on the number of people.

The workshop programme is as follow:

New Uniform Designs

Hellos here are some of the designs we've managed to come up with for now please feel free to add more or comment or improve the designs =] I initially cropped each design out individually for easier viewing but blogger hates me and they couldnt all be uploaded nicely so hopefully the resolution here is good enough...view opening new window/tab would help I think =]

Here are some of the tops, please dont choose them based on colours cause I added colours to see how white, baby blue and light orange base tops would look like =]

1) Inspired by name alpha verve hence the A and V at the neck...bareback (v sexy haha)
2)simple design playing around with the 3 colors
3)similar to the first but front and back has the same opening
4)toga top design i think it will look nice with a shiny base
5)cute collared design

*disclaimer: i am a designer not artist so i suck at the graphics so please help out with logo etc to put on top =] so far the best ive come up with is ALPHA in blue with orange outline and vice versa haha

1)tight at top pleated at the bottom (tested with all 3 bases for viewing pleasure)
2)front and back different colours inspired by one of the international teams which had different colors for back and front i thought it looked really cool when they flipped and you can see the change in color
3)simple tight skirt with either 1 or 2 slits up to u
4)tight skirt with side slits
5)front side slit

Jiayi's design:

1) I like the skirt i think its quite cute and suggested armband as well of this length ive tried wearin them before if you pull to a certain height they dont slip down yupyup.
the top is inspired by bonitochico's newest collection top.
